Good Ol' Hamburger Pie!
Ingredients
1 Pound ground hamburger meat
1 Can green beans
1 Can tomato sauce
Approx. 4 potatoes
½ Bag of shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
Pre-heat your oven to 365 degrees
First you want to clean and skin the potatoes then cook them in a
pot of boiling water,
Once the potatoes are in the pot you can start to brown the meat
in a skillet,
When the meat is brown drain the grease and put it in glass
cookware,
Drain the green beans and put them in with the
meat,
Next you add the tomato sauce to the mixture and mix it all
up,
Then when your potatoes are done you drain the water from them,
make mashed potatoes (I like adding the butter and milk with
them),
When your potatoes are mashed add it to the top of your meat,
sauce, and green bean mixture,
Place it in the oven for about 25-30 minutes taking it out at 20
to put the cheese on top of the
potatoes,
Once it’s cooked take it out and let cool for a good ten
minutes.
These are the ingredients and instructions to make one of my family’s favorite meals,
Hamburger Pie. Most people look at me weird when I tell them that my favorite
food, or meal, is hamburger pie because most of them haven’t heard of it before.
I know of maybe one other person who has had hamburger pie before they met me.
This dish isn’t really a pie with crust and a fruity filling, it’s savory and filling and a meal alone.
It’s been in my family for as long as I can remember and I plan on carrying on
the tradition when I start my own family. This dish means a lot to my family
because when we are all together, which we rarely are, my mom always makes this
dish. It represents culture by being the food that we eat when we are surrounded
by family. This food brings happiness with it and that is associated with the
feelings we feel while we eat it. I’ve been able to trace this dish back to
England where I presume it started as a sort of shepherd’s pie.
